Finding connection through sound, rhythm, and expression
Music gives students a meaningful way to express themselves, build confidence, and connect with others through sound, rhythm, movement, and shared experience. Whether students are singing, playing instruments, learning songs, or exploring rhythm, music creates opportunities for creativity while supporting listening, concentration, coordination, and collaboration.
Across the ADEA communities of Wollaston Lake, Black Lake, and Fond du Lac, music can help bring students, families, schools, and communities together. Musical experiences provide opportunities for students to share their talents, learn from one another, and take part in activities that strengthen a sense of belonging and connection.
ADEA is fortunate to have wonderful music teachers, Annetta Whetham and Melissa Dy, whose dedication, creativity, and encouragement help make music an engaging and meaningful part of student learning. Through their guidance, students are supported as they explore instruments, develop musical skills, discover their own abilities, and gain confidence in expressing themselves through music.
For many students, music can also create meaningful connections to Denesųłiné culture, family, community, language, and identity. Songs and musical experiences can carry stories, memories, teachings, and traditions from one generation to another. Through music, students can explore both traditional and contemporary forms of expression while learning the importance of listening, participating, and creating together.
Learning music encourages students to experiment, practise, and develop their abilities over time. Playing an instrument or learning a new song takes patience and persistence, and every step forward can help build confidence. With the support of teachers, students are encouraged to try new things, work together, celebrate progress, and enjoy the experience of making music.
Music can also create joyful opportunities for students to celebrate their creativity and share what they have learned. Classroom activities, school performances, community gatherings, and special events can give students a chance to perform, participate, and connect with others through music.
The music activity featured beside this text is one example of how students can learn through participation and creative expression. It reflects the concentration, practice, enjoyment, and teamwork involved in making music and highlights the value of providing students with opportunities to discover their voices, develop new skills, celebrate their communities, and experience the power of music together.
